Starting near the end of this year, almost every visitor to the United Kingdom who does not currently need a visa to enter the country will be required to take an extra step and apply for UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
Much like the ESTA program in the US, the new ETA system in the United Kingdom is a web-based electronic travel authorization system designed to determine the eligibility of travelers to enter the UK when they do not require a visa for entry. Similar systems are already in place in Canada and several other nations.
How Do You Get a United Kingdom ETA?
The UK government provides a UK ETA mobile app where you can apply, or you can go online to apply at the GOV.UK website. According the government information, application approval takes around three business days.

The price for each applicant is currently £10.
How Long Is the United Kingdom ETA Valid For?
The ETA will remain valid for two years, so long as your passport does not expire before then. If your passport does expire before two years, you’ll be required to get a new ETA. Each ETA allows for multiple visits to the UK, but importantly does not guarantee entry to the country.
Who Will Need a United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorization?
The UK is rolling out requirements gradually. Starting November 15, 2023, nationals of Qatar will require an ETA to enter the UK.

The exact dates of when nationals of additional countries will begin requiring ETAs for UK entry has not been published. However, the UK government has stated that nationals of all countries who’s citizens can currently enter the UK without a visa will require an ETA by the end of 2024. This will include American and Canadian nationals.
What Will Change if I Need a Visa to Enter the UK?
At this point, nothing. The ETA system will not affect those who need a visa to travel to the UK. They will continue to have the same visa requirements after the ETA system is implemented until the UK government states otherwise.
